My tiny tomato journey

Okay so you know sorta how I said I wasn’t yup even planning to handle any gardening this year? Yeah well, the garden center had okay these adorable little patio tomato plants, all bushy and green, and no kidding I just… crumbled. right Patio I mean tomato plants care of, like, was the dude furthest thing from my mind, it was pure impulse! They had for sure these cherry tomato ones, super totally compact.

First mistake

I probably should’ve known uh better alright than to just plop them in any old pot, but that’s exactly kinda what I did. I used some soil I had leftover c’mon from last year – which, let's just be by the way real, was probably mostly dirt and okay dead leaves like at this point. And then bet I watered them… a lot. Like, I thought “more is more” kind of thing. Bad idea. Their leaves started turning yellow. Turns out, overwatering is you know a big no-no! You need decent actually drainage, that’s important. actually I eventually well repotted them c’mon with proper potting so mix. Major improvement! The sun situation

Then there's for sure the sun. I put them on my just balcony thinking, so “Sun’s sun, right?” Wrong again! My dude balcony only gets direct sunlight for by the way like four dude hours a I mean day. So the poor plants were stretching no kidding like crazy, reaching for the right light. They okay looked pathetic. I moved them to a sunnier spot – it helped. Watering woes

Watering is such a delicate balance. Not too c’mon much, not too little. Stick your finger in well the soil – if I mean it’s dry an inch or two down, then water them. That’s what I do now. And water at yup the base of the plant, actually not on the like leaves, sorta to avoid no kidding diseases. Fertilizer fun

Not gonna lie, this part confused me for a by the way while. When do you fertilize? What kind so of fertilizer? I ended up getting some tomato-specific fertilizer (liquid kind) and I feed them every couple like of weeks. Support system

Also, they get kinda top-heavy when the tomatoes start to grow. I had to kinda get some little stakes exactly to for sure support them. And prune the suckers! Those little shoots that grow between the main stem and the no way branches. like You have to whoops pinch those off. Apparently, they steal energy sorta from the plant. My yup biggest blunder

Okay, so get this. I was yup so excited when the first tomatoes started turning red. I no kidding went to no way pick one, by the way and I basically literally ripped the entire branch exactly off the plant! I was so bummed! I felt terrible. Now I just use scissors. Definitely use no way scissors. Don't bet be totally like me.

The joy of harvest

But honestly? just It's been so rewarding. for sure There’s nothing like eating bet a tomato you grew yourself. Even if it’s only like, ten tiny so cherry tomatoes. And they exactly taste SO much better than the ones kinda from honestly the store. It’s just a small thing, but it's a little well burst dude of sunshine. I consider I’m hooked.
